Jiu Jitsu Star
"Empowerment, dedication, practice."
Akira Bua, 11
How old are you and what sports do you play?
I am 11 and I do Jiu Jitsu.
What are 3 words that describe the impact sports has had on you?
Empowerment, dedication, practice.
How do you feel when you accomplish something you never have before in Jiu Jitsu?
When I accomplish something new in Jiu Jitsu it makes me feel like I'm on top of the world. But I know these feelings are fleeting and the next day even though I have a gold medal in hand, it's back to the drawing board. My Dad says in his art, "you are only as good as your next painting". And that's how I feel about Jiu Jitsu. I am only as good as my next match.
Who is your role model? What do you want to be when you grow up?
My role model is Mackenzie Dern. I don't know what I want to be when I'm an adult. I love reading and writing and competing and sports and art...
What advice would you give to your 5-year-old self?
I would probably tell my five year old self to work hard at anything I want to be great at.
What are the top 3 things you have to be to succeed in your sport?
To do Jiu Jitsu you have to have commitment, take risks, not be afraid of loosing because whenever you loose, you also learn.
Anything else you want to tell us about Jiu Jitsu that we may not know ?
Jiu Jitsu is known as the gentle art but what most people don't know is that it is also the art of strangulation and putting someone to sleep but I like the idea that it's just pure art.
What is your greatest memory from doing Jiu Jitsu?
When I had to go up two weight classes to fight in Las Vegas and won.
What's the latest thing you've accomplished?
My most recent accomplishment is getting better at wrestling, which improves my takedowns.
What are your goals for this summer?
I have a lot of competitions coming up, but my main goal is not to win all of them, it is to get better, and improve my game!
